The history of Alphabet
Sometims you want to get in touch with someone you haven't seen for a while. What will you do if he lives far away?
You can write a letter, and he will write back to you.
We can do so because we have a very good writing system. We have been using Han-Gul for over five hundred years.
It's one of the best writing systems in the world.
A long time ago people didn't have a writing system they could use.
They often used drawing to tell a story.
For example, the first drawing shows that people were brave in war.
Other drawings show us a successful day of hunting they had.
But drawing coudln't express everything.
They could easily draw a picture of cow, a fish, or a cave.
But they couldn't draw pictures of "here","good", or "love"
Besides they couldn't remember all the pictures because there were so many of them.
Then, about 3500years ago, the root of the alphabet was first made by the semites.
they invented 22 sound symbols.
Before long, the phoenicians also began to use the same symbols.
They lived near the semites.
They were sea merchants who sailed to many parts of the world.
As a result, they spread this writing system to people of other nations.
The Greeks added two more letters, and these 24 alphaber letters were used by the Romans.
The Romans also changed the alphabet a little bit and brought it to England.
Since then, people in many countries have been using the English alphabet of 26 letters.
Each letter of the alphabet has an interesting origin.
The letter a was the symbol for the head of an ox.
Then little by little it changed like this.
the letter B was the symbol for a house.
the Greeks called these two letters.
it is now used in many countrise all over the world.
It may be one of the most important invention in the history of the world.
